Accommodation:
Siem Reap, due to its proximity to Angkor Wat, has an abundance of places to hole up for the night ranging from all-inclusive five-star resorts to small single beds in dorms of 30+ people. Having carefully looked over the listings online we decided to stay at Mekong Hostel which cost us $3 a night each for a bed in a 6-person mixed dorm. The hostel had a swimming pool, billiards table, bar with reasonably priced food and drinks (especially during happy hour), WIFI on every level and air-conditioning in the rooms. The staff were very helpful and could arrange practically any kind of tour you could possibly ask for in and around Siem Reap. The only issue we found with the hostel was that the bunk beds were so close to each other that you were essentially sleeping with the person who happened to be in the bed next to you.
Food:
Happy Panchos deserves a special mention in this blog because up until this point we had largely been left disappointed by the western food on offer. Only a 2-minute walk from our hostel, we decided to try our luck at this Mexican restaurant and we were absolutely stunned at how all three of our dishes turned out excellent. Not only did they manage to give that authentic Mexican taste to the tacos, they also pulled off the best Pizza we've had in Asia and the pasta was also done to near perfection. We would recommend to anyone staying nearby to try this place out if you are tired of eating chicken and rice!
Entertainment:
If the hostel's happy hour just isn't working for you or you want to step up your game you need only look to Pub Street. There are regular pub crawls going on (try out Yolo Bar) where for a small fee you get given a vest and guide to take you to some 8 or so bars with a free shot at each. This is a fun way to meet new people and have a great night out.
If the pub crawl is too much or you simply want to try out local cuisine and browse some of the wares, Angkor Night Market is the place to head to. You can get your hands on all sorts of things from souvenirs to clothes. If you've been to any other night market, however, you'll soon realise that they all sell roughly the same stuff.
