The small city of Toamasina on the east coast of Madagascar is the gateway to the pristine island of Ile St. Marie and serves as a transit town mainly for tourists. Originally, Toamasina was not going to get a mention, however we felt that we simply could not omit Le Bateau Ivre from our blog.

Situated on the seafront, this French-run restaurant serves delicious food ranging from traditional French and European dishes to seafood and Malagasy delicacies. The smoked white tuna starter was hands down the best food I've tasted on this trip and the seafood platter was monstrous. If you find yourself in Toamasina for a day you HAVE to come here. They are open all day and usually have barbecues by the poolside and live jazz in the evenings. The manager served us himself as it was not so busy and the arranged rum at the end helped digest the more than large portions.
